About Us

Who we are

The Aphasia iCafe was founded in April 2020 by two speech and language therapy students, Erika Mangialardi and Sarah Murphy, with the backing of their tutors from the University of Essex. Their goal was to address the lack of speech and therapy resources during the pandemic and alleviate isolation for those with aphasia.

Erika and Sarah's commendable work was recognized by the Tavistock Trust for Aphasia Prize. Since then, the Aphasia iCafe has experienced tremendous growth, with members from around the globe, including the UK, US, India, Australia, and Italy.

Presently, Erika manages and coordinates the groups while supervising students and volunteers who lead the group sessions. The Aphasia iCafe provides a unique opportunity for aspiring SLTs to develop and refine their communication and interpersonal skills with individuals facing communication challenges.

We at Aphasia iCafe embrace the Life Participation Approach to Aphasia (LPAA), utilizing supported conversation strategies throughout our services. Our groups are led by trained speech and language therapy students and volunteers who are passionate about supporting people with aphasia and their loved ones.

We strive to create a secure and welcoming environment where individuals with aphasia can come together, connect, and obtain the support they require. We appreciate your involvement in our community and eagerly anticipate supporting individuals with Aphasia worldwide as we continue to grow.
